All the New Wireless Stuff About Digital Picture Frames
I think finally the technology of consumer electronics is coming close to losing wires and cables all together. Well, until we can economically distribute wireless power to our gadgets we will still have to use power cords, but at least we can finally do away with the computer/digital camera connection via USB cord.
I just have always loathed the chore of finding a USB port on my computer, finding the proper USB cord that fits my digital camera, and getting those two things to talk to each other successfully. Then, of course, if you want to put those picture on display with your favorite digital picture frame, you might need another cord for that one two. If you get lucky your digital frame will have a standard USB port so you won’t need all those different cords, but most of the time, this is not the case. Luckily, recently we have been seeing a lot more of these wireless digital frames. Finally, we can leave the digital picture frame over on the table for display. Find the pictures from the computer, and upload them wirelessly to our digital picture frame.
Wireless digital frames using Bluetooth have been around for a little while now. The problem with this is, unless you want to display the crappy pictures taken from the camera on your cell phone, most computers and laptops don’t come with Bluetooth technology built-in, and it will be come quite hard to use that Bluetooth to transfer your albums from the computer. The new wireless digital picture frames, on the other hand, use standard wireless frequencies like 802.11g. The same technology used at McDonald’s and Starbucks hotspots so you can check your email while getting your coffee. This technology makes the new digital frames basically a small laptop computer to display pictures. Transferring pictures to the picture frame is as easy as drag and drop from one folder to another on the desktop.

Digital Frame Capacity
What do we mean when we talk about digital frame capacity? Well I could get all technical and talk about bits, bytes and gigs (not the footballer) and hard drives etc but I think I will keep it nice and simple.
In simple terms if you imagine a tube 25 cms high which you have to fill with items that are 5cms high, simple math tells you that you would get 5 small items into the tube, the same principle applies to the digital picture frame; if your frame’s capacity is 1000 bits and each picture is 100 bits then you will be able to fit 10 x 100 pictures onto the frame’s memory because that is its CAPACITY.
OK so I will have to get a bit ‘techy’ here.
In reality the digital frame capacity in picture terms of a 128MB card is about 1020 photos, (around 26MB used by frame’s operating system). If the frame’s internal memory capacity is 1GB you will be able to store and display approximately 2000 images. So does it matter if the internal memory in a digital picture frame is 1GB or 128MB? Not really, I mean who is going to sit and watch 2000 images in one burst! Capacity hardly matters, its much better choose the right digital picture frame based on other criteria, such as image resolution and price.
So digital frame capacity isn’t a deal breaker but if you really need or want to know this is really what you need to be asking, forget about the technicalities, here are some of the questions you might ask:
• How many pictures can I upload to my frame?
• Are they adjusted to size by the frame’s software?
• Can the frame be rotated and will the images still fit the viewing area?
• How do I get them on and off the frame?
• Do I have to connect it to my PC or can I do it wirelessly?
NOTE: if you are using a digital SLR it may be slightly different because it produces images of much larger size, however some frames adjust the images on the fly when they are being uploaded to the memory so this is not an issue. Just remember to ask if you are using a digital SLR.
As an example the very cheapest digital picture frames start at about £30. These offer a very narrow feature set, with a tiny viewing area, rarely no larger than 4″, with relatively low quality image reproduction. For something of this size, you’re probably better off simply viewing with your existing digital camera, or viewing its image on your television, a task most digital cameras are capable of.
A decent frame will cost between £125 and £300 but these will give a good viewing area that can be seen without having to squint and offer lots of features that make presenting your pictures effective and relatively easy.
In a nutshell digital frame capacity is NOT the most important consideration when looking at buying a digital picture frame.
The Apple iPad Vs The Digital Photo Frame – Is the Digital Frame in Trouble?
No doubt Apple has a real winner in the iPad, about to go through transformation into the iPad 2. But what is it? It appears to be a multi-functional touch screen tablet PC. However, with its web browsing, gaming, emailing and social networking capabilities, it could be deemed a glorified Netbook. It can also easily function as an eBook Reader–and with full color!

While a large number of digital photo picture frames still work on the 72 pixels per inch resolution more and more work are working on the 300 pixels per inch resolution.
What is more when it comes time to print them out to give to Cleatus your computer illiterate cousin “It’s not gonna look all cloudy and muddy like”. This is likely to apply more to larger frames than digital frames that are smaller. A 7 inch digital frame shouldn’t give you too many problems for example.

How can I transfer old pictures to digital frames?

Once the pictures are digitalized they can be put onto a TF card or USB and transmitted to the digital photo picture frames directly or put onto a CD and transferred from the computer via a USB cable.
The normal rules apply when it comes time to save these images, make sure they’re the right dimensions, file type (JPEG nine times out of 10 but check you photo frame) and resolution.
So, it appears that putting images onto digital frames isn’t as hard as you’d normally expect and even shifting a physical picture from a photo frame to LCD digital frame isn’t as hard as you’d think it would be.
